It’s almost that time of year again: sorority and fraternity recruitment. Greek chapters are beginning to size up this new crop of potential new members and planning out their strategies for the fall rush. They’re trying to figure out not just how to attract PNMs to the chapter, but also how to find the right people for them.

How To Improve Recruitment? The way to improve recruitment can be broken down into 3 steps:

1. Train your members

2. Demonstrate value

3. Have fun with it

Recruitment is one of the most important parts of managing and maintaining a healthy, successful chapter. After all, a fraternity is only as strong as its brothers. A sorority is nothing without a great bunch of sisters.  Your people are your foundation. Recruits are the future of the chapter.

How Do You Nail Sorority and Fraternity Recruitment?

Here are the GreekXperience Top 3 Tips for nailing this year’s Greek life recruitment season.

1. Train Your Members

You can have the best marketing strategy in the world, but it doesn’t matter if your current members aren’t equipped to handle rush week. Sure, you may have given out gallons of free ice cream and spent hours playing pickup basketball or getting your nails done, but those tactics won’t accomplish your sorority or fraternity recruitment goals if your brothers or sisters don’t know how to capitalize on them.

Take time to demonstrate recruitment techniques. Educate your sales force about the best way to talk to and follow up with PNMs. Not everyone is a great salesman, but we can at least give them the tools that they need to become one.

Before establishing your sorority or fraternity’s recruitment strategy, prior to organizing any events, or creating any promotional materials, sit down with the chapter. Think about it like a business meeting or workshop. Heck, you can even make a PowerPoint. Do whatever it takes to get your members up to snuff on recruitment.

2. Demonstrate Value

PNMs are looking for more than just a group of friends and a place to call home. They understand that Greek organizations provide a valuable stepping-stone to the real world after college. Demonstrate the value that your chapter provides to its members, both socially and professionally.

Show them a database of successful alumni that will become part of their network. Tell them about how your own members are already taking advantage of these opportunities by establishing contacts and partaking in internships.

PNMs need to understand that they’ll be joining a fraternity or sorority that will support them for the rest of their lives. To paraphrase a great president: Ask not what you can do for the chapter, but ask what your chapter can do for you. Though we certainly want to find the best people out there, we still need to approach PNMs with this mindset.

3. Have Fun with It!

At the end of the day, people want to have fun especially college kids. Sure, they want to know about the opportunities that come along with joining your chapter, but they simply won’t care if they don’t think that they’ll have fun. Yes, they’re judging you.

Don’t just tell them how much fun you all have. Show them! Have a great time in the recruitment process. Smile, joke around and keep it real. Recruitment can be a crazy time for any chapter, but showing PNMs that you can roll with it and still have a blast is one of the most important things that you can do.

Basically, we want PNMs to look at us and think, Wow! They look like they’re having such a good time. Now that’s what I want. Send out those good vibes, and like moths to a lamppost, the recruits will start flocking your way.
